As a budget-minded shopper and self-proclaimed thrifty Mom, I am a Walmart shopper. A postcard advertising Walmart’s Online Grocery Service showed up in my mailbox one day. It attracted my curiosity and offered $10 off my first order. So why not give it a try?
Register Online. Walmart’s website is easy to read and user-friendly. I am already a registered user, but if it’s your first time shopping for anything at Walmart you will have to sign up.
Go To grocery.walmart.com to start your grocery shopping, and you will see a button in the top upper right corner asking you to “reserve a time for your order.
You Can Place Your Order Up To 4 Days Out. I knew I had time to swing by after work the next day, so I reserved for the very next day. Maybe the time frame is different in different areas, but for me I had 4 days.
Select The Walmart Of Your Choice. Walmart’s online grocery is still in its early stages, and they are still improving their process, so not every Walmart offers it. Unfortunately, my closest one was not available, but I still wanted to give it a try, and it wasn’t a far stretch to go by there after work.
Pick A Time Frame For Pick Up. I selected 3pm-4pm. But in the process I was told that I had until 6pm to pick up my order, or it would then be restocked. Nice of them to allow for unexpected delays.
Begin Shopping. Pick your items by “department” or by a “search.” The options are very much like being at the store. There was a full selection of items, not just 2 items per category.
Just Click Your Item And Add To Your Cart. You will see your items clearly listing on the side of the screen along with your dollar total. If you want to price compare you can still do that. Each item clearly states the price per ounce to help you make your choice.
$30 Minimum Order. And no extra fees. The prices are the same low prices as in the store. They are not increased for this service.
Check-Out. When you’re done selecting, check-out and pay. Right now the only way to pay is by credit card. There is no PayPal or other option at this time. Enter any coupon codes at this time, and if you’re a first-timer you will more than likely find one on their website. You don’t need a mailer to get one.
Walmart Grocery App. You are given the option to install the Walmart grocery app on your apple or android device. Then for even faster pickup service, you can “check-in” about 10 minutes prior to your arrival, and your order will be ready to go.
Oops! Forgot something? You will get an order confirmation upon payment. But if you realize in the next several hours that you forgot something and wanted to add it, you can! I placed my order around 3:30pm, and I was told I could add to my order up until 1am!
PICKING UP YOUR ORDER
Confirmation Call. Remember I was scheduled for 3pm-4pm pickup? Well, they called me at 2:15pm saying my order was ready. That was a nice touch. I then received another call (obviously mistaken) at 2:37pm also saying my order was ready.
Walmart Grocery Pick Up. I drove up and readily saw the signs leading me to the side of the building. There were 8 parking spaces clearly marked for grocery pick up, away from the regular parking lot.
I’m Here! I had forgotten my password for the phone app, so I had been unable to check-in prior to my arrival. BUT there is a large, easy-to-read phone number on the sign in your parking space that you call and tell them you’re here. I called, and they were at my car within a minute. Clearly I didn’t need the app that day.
My Order Comes Out. Two customer service agents came out, one pulling a cart with my groceries. I opened my automatic van door, with the push of a button, and never left my car seat. I was apologetically told that there were 2 items not in stock, so they were unable to fulfill the entire order. The total amount was adjusted for that, and I signed for my order. I chatted for an extra minute to ask them about other Walmarts providing service, but all in all I was in and out in 5 minutes.
Easy, User-Friendly Website. Walmart has clear pictures of their items, attractive layout, large fonts, and easy to follow instructions.
Great Time Saver. It took me about 20 minutes to place my order online. I ordered 14 items for around $60 in the comfort of my own home. It would’ve taken me more time to park, go in the store, shop, checkout, and get back out to my car had I gone in person.
You’re Sick. If you’re not feeling so well, but you’ve gotta buy some soup and bread and ibuprofen, and you just don’t feel like really going to the store, you can easily place your order and have a friend or spouse swing by and pick it up, or you can stay in your pajamas in the warmth of your own car, and go get it yourself.
You Have to Work Late. You place an order and have your spouse swing by and pick it up on his/her way home. Boom. Grocery shopping done.
Your Mobility is Limited. Just order online, drive over to pick it up, and you never have to leave your car.
You Want To Help Your Elderly Family Member. Let your family member pick their items online, and then you can stop by and pick it up for them.
You Have Small Children. You have an infant or multiple small children and it’s just too difficult to take them shopping, you can easily accomplish your grocery shopping with the help of Walmart’s Online Grocery.
Bad Weather. I don’t know about you, but I hate doing my errands when it’s raining outside. I will just put them off to another day if I have to. I don’t like getting in and out of the car with the umbrella, and braving the icky weather to get shopping done. Now you can sit in your car and have it brought to you, rain or shine!
Your Order History Now Exists. Once you’ve shopped, your order history is now in the system. So next time you go online it won’t take as long to place your order. You can refer to your previous orders and your process will be simplified.
Variety. I ordered from many departments to test it out. I ordered standard grocery items, but also produce, a deli item that would require slicing, and a couple items from the Health and Beauty department. My cold items came cold, and my apples were accurate. I ordered 1 lb. which they said was generally 2-3 apples, and I received 3 apples.
Get Your Beer Here! Yes, you can even buy alcohol if you’re over 21 through their online grocery. Running out of beer at your cook out? Send hubby to the store to get some more! Heck, he can pick up some diapers while he’s there. Just pull in, get your order, and you’ll be back at your party in no time.
Refer a Friend And Get $10. It’s another easy way to save money!
More Walmarts Need To Provide The Service. It will be more advantageous to me when a closer Walmart offers grocery pickup.
Deli Selection. Here is a flaw that needs improvement. I wanted 1- 1/4 lbs. of cheese for a particular recipe, but you can only order in 1 lb. increments. They need to allow for people to order incrementally. I went ahead and ordered 2 lbs., since I know we’ll be able to use it.
Breads. They have a LOT of loaves and items to pick from, but they did not have “Light” English Muffins in any brand. So I didn’t buy any kind at all. Also, I order a double fiber bread that I have recently found, though admittedly it is a little hard to find sometimes. Remember I had 2 items they were unable to get for me? This was one of them, and I needed it to make a school lunch the next day. So I would now have to go to another grocery store to get my loaf of bread which defeated my purpose of ordering online. Now I know that I need to make sure I’m ordering items that are more common brands and/or something that I could live without until my next shopping trip.
Improving Their Process. I’m sure there will be an occasional item on an order that can’t be fulfilled. Walmart Online Grocery is still in limited markets as they continue to test and improve their processes. Right now I think they’ve got a good thing going. I plan to use them again.
My overall experience was great! I was very impressed by the entire procedure, happy with the customer service, and looking forward to expanding my Walmart shopping options.
